The reports state that the UK release of the Google Nexus One has been pushed back to mid-April, not earlier in the month as previously expected.

The reason for the delay hasn’t been given, but it’s all the more confusing as other reports are claiming that shipments of the Nexus One are imminent to Vodafone.

Not just the UK

Or course, the UK is just one territory for Vodafone to begin selling the Nexus One, as it has plans to do so all over Europe.

But the UK will be one of the first territories, so if the phone is shipping, it should come here first.

All this talk is essentially just handing the advantage to HTC – by the time the Nexus One launches, both the HTC Desire (which is very similar in design to the Nexus One) and the HTC Legend will have appeared on the UK market.

And it’s hard to see how Google intends to make waves with a phone that it won’t really market – the online portal seems to be the only way to get it.

The App store is jam packed with iPhone apps – we’ve previously covered our Top 10 best free iPhone apps, our pick of the 10 best free iPhone games on the planet and many more.

Our complete guide to the best iPhone apps links to all the best apps you can get your hands on.

But what if you just want to know the 10 apps that every iPhone user absolutely must own?

Then read on…

01. Tweetie £1.79 Our favourite Twitter client

We know that you might not be interested in a client for the microblogging service Twitter, but Tweetie is such an excellent example of how apps make the iPhone great that it takes our top spot nonetheless; Twitter was born for the iPhone.

Tweetie lacks only push notifications (though you could add that with an app such as Boxcar) to make it the ultimate Twitter app; it can geotag your tweets, let you view conversations, supports Lists, the new retweet feature and more.

Buy from the iTunes Store

02. Documents To Go £8.99 Word, Excel and PowerPoint editing

Documents to Go has the best word processor we’ve seen on iPhone, letting you create and edit Word docs while retaining formatting. It can work with Excel and PowerPoint documents, too, and the Premium edition lets you grab attachments from Gmail or Exchange servers.

Buy from the iTunes Store

03. The Guardian £2.39 Get your news on the go!

We’re often asked why you’d spend money on an app that lets you do something that’s free through Safari. This app is a good answer. Not only can you tailor the news that is delivered, but it’s simple to use and you can cache stories to read offline when you’re on the Tube.

Buy from the iTunes Store

04. TomTom UK & Ireland £59.99 Turn-by-turn directions

There are cheaper apps that add turn-by-turn navigation to the iPhone 3GS (the £26.99 CoPilot Live app will happily get you from A to B) but it should come as no surprise that the app from TomTom is by far the most polished. It lacks live traffic info, but we hope that’s coming soon.

Buy from the iTunes Store

05. Facebook £FREE Social networking client

The great thing about this app is that it lets you keep in touch with friends and upload photos from the iPhone’s camera straight to Facebook. It also offers push notifications too. Now as soon as a friend comments on your status, you’ll know.

06. Reeder £1.79 The best RSS reader

This little app syncs with Google Reader, a service for reading RSS feeds from your favourite sites. Though the interface looks a little sparse, it’s actually stuffed with features, and since there are lots of Google Reader clients for the Mac too, you can keep your feeds in sync.

Buy from the iTunes Store

07. Mobile Allowance £0.59 A super billing assistant

Whether your iPhone came from O2 or Orange, this is a fantastic app for keeping track of how much of your monthly allocation of minutes and texts you have used, plus any extra charges. We installed the free O2 one, but went back to Mobile Allowance as it’s much cleaner.

Buy from the iTunes Store

08. Instapaper Pro £2.99 Offline reading

You know how you often come across articles on the web that you want to read, just not now? Ping them to the free Instapaper service, then use this app that caches for offline reading for you to read later. There’s a free version too, though it lacks the tilt-to-scroll feature.

Buy from the iTunes Store

09. RedLaser £1.19 The ultimate price checker

This app uses the iPhone’s camera to take pictures of barcodes, then looks for the product online to check prices. Amazon results are first, but it also supports Google Product Search to query a huge number of other online stores. Just don’t let the staff in HMV catch you!

Buy from the iTunes Store

10. National Rail Enquiries £4.99 Rail journey planner

Sure, you can use Safari to muddle through the National Rail’s website to find times, but, while it’s expensive, this app is an essential investment for regular train-users. It helps plan journeys, optionally remembering your favourite stations and even favourite journeys, and shows the live progress of your train.

Our favourite feature: tap a button marked ‘Next train home’ and the iPhone will work out where you are, where your closest station is, and when the next train leaving for your home station departs.

Buy from the iTunes Store

——————————————————————————————————-

Vodafone UK has finally confirmed that it will be bringing the HTC Legend and HTC Desire to the UK.

Vodafone UK has finally confirmed that it will be bringing the HTC Legend and HTC Desire to the UK.

The two phones will be offered on Vodafone’s network, with the Legend an exclusive handset for the carrier.

Vodafone was on stage at the launch of the HTC duo at Mobile World Congress and stated that it was bringing the phones to Europe, but inexplicably Vodafone UK refused to admit it was bringing either to our shores.

The truth is out there

But now the truth is out, as we revealed earlier this week, and customers can start getting excited about getting the two hottest handsets of the year.

In our HTC Legend review, we saw a phone that we consider a real contender for phone of the year. And for our hands on HTC Desire review it also became clear that the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered phone is also going to be a real winner.

Both have been given a UK release date for April on Vodafone, and users can register their interest in the phones on the red network’s site.

Vodafone UK has finally confirmed that it will be bringing the HTC Legend and HTC Desire to the UK. The two phones will be offered on Vodafone's network, with the Legend an exclusive handset for the carrier

HTC has confirmed it is working on an upgrade to Android 2.1 for the HTC Tattoo.

According to an oddly-translated statement from FrAndroid, the company says that coding the new 2.1 upgrade with is Sense UI is taking time.

While the same is already on the HTC Legend and HTC Desire, the HTC Tattoo is a cheaper phone, with a smaller, resistive screen, so work has to be undertaken to bring Android 2.1 to it.

“Kindly note we understand that now that a phone running Android OS 2.1 is available that you are excited to get an update for your Tattoo.

Coming to its Senses

“We are still working hard to building Sense for this new version but we expect to have the upgrade finished and ready to go soon.

“Please understand that it takes time to customize any Android version to ensure you have the intuitive experience Sense provides, and we hope you can be patient for just a little while longer.”

So good news for Tattoo users – you could be getting all the spicy Android goodness currently enjoyed by the Legend and Desire in the near future.

Good news for those frustrated by the single track mind of the iPhone – it seems multi-tasking is finally on its way.

According to Apple Insider, “people with a proven track record in predicting Apple’s technological advances” have managed to dig out this little nugget about the next iPhone 4.0 update.

The sources state that Apple has managed to tweak things to the point where it can manage battery life and memory resources, meaning no substantial loss in performance.

Not ready yet

However, the firmware update is not ready as yet, as it apparently has a ‘long way to go’ before it’s ready to be shot out to all the iPhones.

The debate over why Apple is unable to put features in its phones that every other manufacturer has managed with aplomb for yonks is an old one – it seems likely that Jobs is just looking to keep things back to make new iPhones seem even swishier.

Going on the usual release dates, we’d imagine we’ll see the new iPhone 4.0 firmware release date in the next couple of months – with the next iPhone (which probably won’t be called the iPhone 4G, although that’s the codename doing the rounds) announced in June.

Google has announced the full launch of its stock-checking service, where mobile phone users can see if their desired item is available.

If you’re searching for a product or price comparing items, you can then click on the blue dot below telling you it’s ‘In Stock Nearby’.

The list of shops in your vicinity will be displayed – this will tell you whether the item is In Stock or subject to Limited Availability.

Shopping – now ridiculously easy

If you’re using an iPhone, Android-enabled mobile or a Palm Pre or Pixi, the web browser will use your aGPS to work out your location (or you can manually enter it yourself).

However, this service is only available for shops like Best Buy, Sears, Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, or West Elm – yep, you’ve got it right: only in the US for now.

But Google has offered to discuss the service with any other retailers as well – so there’s every chance we could see this rolled out to the UK as well.
